The computer was in the shop for a week as it was rattling like an old Lada trying to get up Denny Hill. When I arrived to pick it up, the techie was happily anticipating sizeable cash fow for a new 80gb HD and gig RAM. Although the computer is officially 2years old and was still under guarantee when the motherboard suffered meltdown on the Ides of January, HP is a very dodgy company leaving me with nearly double the expense in repair bills as in the original order. The result is that it got carted off for reincarnation as a Czech special which causes hassles with Bill the Pill over there in Seattle. Computers with suffering internal family quarrels and divorce bills that abandon bitchy old mothers and acquiring new ones, also get divorce bills from Microsoft with the claim that a new motherboard constitutes a new computer; therefore, the Windows license is not transferrable. Natch, this means more income for Redmond and more out of my pocket on a computer that was still under guarantee from HP, but sticking me with outrageous repair bils while pasing the buck on replacement parts and maintenance. So I inquired about how the new HD blended in with the adopted family, "Do I have to have everything re-installed or is the memory just automatically expanded?" This gave the techie something apparently to think about as he was looking at the invoice. I was unwilling to cart 17kg across town on my back without reassurance that the stuff was in the box. I am a person who delights in demonstrations. The papers were handed across the desk as I asked the pertinent question, "Is the 80gb HD in the box?" Indeed not, but they discovered the rattle. The techie hastily removed the offending computer from my feet and dragged it into the backroom to return redfaced. His was the error. He had forgotten to list it on the work order.

So it's here now, again with the familiar Lada rattle, laboring up Beacon Hill or climbing the steps to the Hrad in preparation of yet another exciting James Bond film, but working again after another round of convincing Bill the Pill in Redmond that indeed it is my computer albeit the mechanics, A, Zip drive and CD-RW are from the first 4gb Czech special and the 40gb HD from HP while the motherboard et al are from the reincarnation after the Ides of January 2006. Accordingly, if you have software that came with a computer, you cannot continue using it if the motherboard is changed. A new motherboard by MS definition is a different computer. However, in the Czech Republic, MS gets their money doubled as you cannot buy a computer here off the shelf or place an order without first buying the Czech version and then ordering the English separately. Is very nice system for Bill. Nor is it possible to buy computer off shelf and exchange Czech Windows with English. You must pay Redmond twice.

So don't squawk over there about how unfair the EU is on poor Bill. Not at all-- Microsoft is as dirty as it gets and then Bill always makes the news as being a philanthropist—but actually he rips the world off and then tries to put on a pretty face. If he were really of good intention, he would change such double-dealing policies. And yes, the case is also new and they happily obliged in transferring the stupid stickers onto the new casing. That's also prohibited by MS in Redmond while it fills its pocket with double-pricing. So third time in year of watching MS freeze Office while I re-registered the computer. And after such incredible expense with HP, I would never touch anything by HP again. Certainly not a printer or computer. Maybe a vacuum cleaner, if they can make one better than a sturdy Czech broom.

Vladimir Nabokov
22 April 1899 – 2 July 1977 Montreaux

Vladimir Nabokov was born to an aristocratic family of five children in Tsarist russia under Nicholas II. His father was known as a Liberal politician which cost him ninety days time in prison in 1908 nd his life in 1922. The family split time between their house in St Petersburg and a country estate. French dominated English and Russian had to be tutored to Vladimir who had insufficient knowledge of his mother tongue. He attended a posh private school, Tenishev in St Petersburg where he disdained his equals and his superiors. He was chaffeured daily to the school in a Rolls Royce which further isolated him through snobbery from his classmates. In 1916, his uncle settled a sizeable inheritance on him of two million dollars, but in 1917 the Nabokovs were forced to abandon St Petersburg in the wake of the Revolution. They left Russia to settle first in the Crimea and then moved to England where VN and his brother, Sergei entered Cambridge in 1919. Originally VN undertook studies in ichthyology, but changed to French and Russian Literature.

In 1922, VN translated Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland into Russian. The similarities of the two authors is striking as both had interests in science, notably butterflies and chess. while in the Crimea, VN had accumulated 77 species of butterfly and 100 species of moth. In 1923, he published his first articles in academic entomology in the journal, The Entomologist. His fascination with butterflies served him well as his first appointment in the US was with the Museum of Natural History where he contributed in research and sektches.

In 1922, his parents were living in Berlin where his father had undertaken an editorship of a Russian newspaper for the emigree community. Unluckily he was mistaken one night as Pavel Mikulov by two gunmen who shot and killed him in a theater. His wife was invited to move to Prague where she remained between 1923-1939.

After graduating from Cambridge in 1923, VN took up his father's occupation in Berlin. He supplemented his income through acting in theater and film and by teaching, translating and writing. To avoid confusion with his father, he used the name VI Sirin. In 1925, he met Vera Slonim at a benefit whom he married. They had a son, Dimitri who later asssisted him with his writing.

With the rise of Nazi power, Berlin became a hostile environment. The Nabokovs moved to Paris in 1939, but the stay was short-lived. In 1940, VN arrived in New York where he first worked at the Museum of Natural History and then moved onto Stanford where he taught comparative literature and Russian at Wellesly. During the 1950's VN wrote Lolita during a butterfly excursion in the Rocky Mountains. Lolita was first published in Paris where it created a furor in 1955. In 1958, the book was rleased in the US. Lolita assured Nabokov of financial security so that he was able to withdraw from academic positions and concentrate only on writing and butterflies. Lolita outsold Dr. Zhivago by Boris Pasternak and kept him well-fed. In 1961, Nabokovs moved to Montreaux, Switzerland where he produced Pale Fire. He died there on 2 July 1977.

Important Literary Works:

1922 transl Alice in Wonderland
1952 Conclusive Evidence republished as Speak Memory in 1967
1955 Lolita, published in Paris, 1958 in the US
1958 transl of Lermontov, A Hero of our Time
1959 Invitation to a Beheading
1962 Pale Fire
1967 Speak Memory
1969 Ada

Kaavya Viswanathan is, at the very least, a competent writer: but she is also very much a product of today’s market, a contemporary success story where the key elements are packaging and media managing, and where the book itself is just the content."
