Thornton Wilder
17 April 1897- 7 December 1975

Thornton Wilder was the son of Amos Parker Wilder and Isabella Niven Wilder. His father was a strict Calvinist and newspaper editor, while his mother encouraged literary pursuits and a questioning mind. Wilder studied classical literature at Oberlin College (1915-1917) , but went on to Yale University. In 1920, his first full-length play appeared int the Yale Literary Magazine, but was not produced until 1926. In 1920-1921, Wilder studied at the American Academy in Rome and returned to teach at Lawrenceville School in New Jersey; but in 1926 he returned to academia to complete a Master's at Princeton University where the Trumpet Shallo Sound was finally produced.

His second novel, The Bridge of San Luis Rey was published in 1927, bringing him a Pulitzer. His second Pulitzer came in 1938 wuith Our Town and the third Pulitzer in 1942 with The Skin of Our Teeth which opened with Tallulah Bankhead and Fredric March, sealing both Wilder's and Bankhead's fame. In 1942, he also wrote a screenplay for Alfred Hitchcock, Without a Shadow of a Doubt.

In 1952, Wilder received the Gold Medal for Fiction from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and made it onto the cover of Time Magazine in the following year. Possibly his best known work, The Matchmaker, opened on Broadway in 1955 with Ruth gordon. In 1964, The Matchmaker metamorphised in Hello Dolly opening with a raspy Carol Channing as the meddling matchmaker. Barabara Streisand brought the role into film with Louis Armstrong croaking out the title song.

Wilder used minimalist stage effects and telescoped time through short scenes, borrowing structure and techniques from Berrtold Brecht and Kafka. Our Town is influenced by the Spoon River Anthology of Edgar Lee Masters (1915), . and Sherwood Anderson's Winesburg, Ohio (1919) and Sinclair Lewis' Main Street (1920). Each examines down-home America of the common man. Unlike Brecht, Wilder had no political idealism to proclaim and avoided religious moralism of his father's Calvinism.

In 1963, Wilder received the Presidential Medal. The Eighth Day received the National Book Award in 1967, presenting the dilemma of a man accused of murder, examining the vagaries of human psyche and social reactions to an event without precise details given. The accusations are circumstantial, creating an emotional crisis for the reader who sympathisizes with the victim as reasoonable doubts are raised. Critics point to the similarity between The Bridge at San Luis Rey, The Eighth Day and Luigi Pirandello's Six Authers in Search of Four Characters.
