3. Woman Behind the Words
&& * && *&& * && * && * && * && * &&&

Eudora Welty
April 13,1909 - July 23,2001

Born in Jackson, Mississippi to Christopher Webb Welty and Christina Andrews Welty, Eudora Welty had two brothers, Edward Jefferson and Walter Andrews. She graduated from Jackson Central High School in 1925 and studied at Mississippi State College for Women in Columbia, Mississippi before finishing her last two years at the University at Wisconsin at Madison. At Columbia University, she completed a Masters in the Graduate School of Business, but returned to her hometown after the sudden death of her father in 1931, where she took a job with the local radio station and wrote Delta and Jackson society news for the Memphis Commercial Appeal.

From 1935-36, she was employed on projects under the WPA as part of Roosevelt’s New Deal. She traveled widely for the promotion of civil and industrial projects in poor and remote areas of the state, providing much of the material used later in her stories. Her first important story, “Death of a traveling Salesman” edited by John Rood appeared in 1936. Thereon, her career flourished. Her life encountered much hardship, not only through her WPA work, but also at home. In 1946, her first novel, Delta Wedding, was published, but success came with personal hardship. Her two brothers were

diagnosed with severe arthritis and her mother, paralyzed by a stroke. The next fifteen years, she supported her invalid family. In 1964, The Shoe Bird was published by Harcourt, Brace and World, followed by Thirteen Stories in 1965. In 1966, she received the Creative Arts Medal for Fiction from Brandeis University, but public achievements were countered by personal tragedy: her brothers and mother died in 1966.

She published several story collections including, A Curtain of Green (1941,1964), The Wide Net, (1942) Selected Stories (1953), and The Bride of Innisfallen (1955). “Why I live at the P.O.” is one of her best-known stories typifying a zany world. The novella, Robber Bridegroom was also produced for stage. She produced at least three noteworthy novels, Ponder Heart (1954), Losing Battles (1970) and The Optimist’s Daughter (1972).

She served as a member of the New York Times book staff, and in 1958, she was an Honorary Consultant to the Library of Congress. She received two Guggenheim Fellowships (1942,1949) for literature. The “Worn Path” took an O Henry Prize in 1942. She recieved four awards for Best American Short Stories. In 1973, she received a Pulitzer for Optimist’s Daughter. Other awards include: the French Legion de Honneur, the French Chevalier de l’Odre des Artes et Lettres medal and the Medal of Freedom given by two presidents, Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan. In 1962, she presented William Faulkner with the Gold Medal for Fiction from the National Institute of Arts and :Letters which she later also received in 1972. When she died on July 23, 2001, Eudora Welty held more than 70 Awards, Honors and Titles in recognition for her achievements in literature.

The writer is gone, but words live on.

It's important that you "get" Foolishness. Spend time on our site, hang out on the message boards, and get a feel for what's Foolish and what's not.
